International Fleet Review 2026: India Hosts Global Navies in Vizag

India is gearing up to welcome naval forces from around the world in early 2026. The coastal city of Visakhapatnam will become the centre stage for three landmark maritime gatherings between 15 and 25 February. This will be the first time the country brings together an international fleet review, a large-scale naval drill, and a high-level naval leaders’ meeting all at once.

A Grand Showcase of India’s Naval Strength

The highlight will be a grand review of warships at sea, led by the President of India. Visitors will witness India’s home-built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant leading a formation that includes stealth destroyers from the Visakhapatnam class, advanced frigates of the Nilgiri series, and compact corvettes designed for submarine hunting from the Arnala class. These vessels represent the country’s journey toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

Ships from partner nations, along with Indian Coast Guard vessels and merchant navy units, will join the parade. The display will underline India’s growing ability to design and construct sophisticated warships domestically, earning it recognition as a capable naval builder on the global stage.

What is MAHASAGAR and Why It Matters

The entire programme aligns with the Prime Minister’s MAHASAGAR initiative launched this year. This framework builds on the earlier SAGAR policy but expands the scope beyond the Indian Ocean to foster security and development partnerships worldwide. It promotes sustainable use of ocean resources, stronger regional resilience, and shared responsibility for safe sea lanes.

By organising these events together, India demonstrates its readiness to act as a dependable security ally for countries across different regions. The gathering reinforces commitments to open waterways and inclusive maritime order through established platforms like the Act East Policy and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative.

MILAN 2026: Building Trust Through Joint Drills

The naval exercise named MILAN will run in two phases, one at sea and another in the harbour. Participating crews will practice working together on tasks such as tracking submarine threats, defending against air attacks, sharing real-time maritime information, and conducting rescue missions. These activities help build mutual understanding and improve coordination during real emergencies.

Away from the water, a colourful parade will march along the famous RK Beach road. Sailors from visiting navies will walk alongside Indian Army and Air Force contingents, offering local residents a direct glimpse of international naval friendship.

Expert Discussions and Leadership Summit

A dedicated maritime conference will bring together strategists, government officials, scholars, and industry experts. Sessions will cover current challenges like coordinated disaster response, technology sharing, and ways to enhance cooperation at sea.

Separately, naval heads from twenty-five member countries, nine observer nations, and additional guests will attend the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium leadership meeting. India will take over the chair for the 2025-2027 term, its second time in this role. Discussions will focus on regional security arrangements, humanitarian assistance, and better exchange of operational data.

From Past Reviews to Future Partnerships

India has organised fleet reviews before. The first major one took place in Mumbai in 2001 with twenty foreign navies. The 2016 event in Visakhapatnam drew even wider participation. Similarly, the MILAN exercise started small in 1995 with just four countries at Port Blair and has grown into a key multinational activity, with the 2024 edition seeing widespread involvement.

Visakhapatnam offers the perfect setting with its modern port facilities, strategic position on the east coast, and naval heritage sites. The Eastern Naval Command headquarters adds to the location’s importance. Multiple central ministries, including defence, external affairs, tourism, and culture, are working with the Andhra Pradesh government and local authorities to manage every detail smoothly.

The eleven-day programme is expected to bring substantial business to hotels, restaurants, transport services, and tour operators in the region. Visitors attending the public events, seminars, and parades will explore the city’s beaches, museums, and submarine exhibits, giving a welcome lift to the local economy.
