Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh will lead a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the National Police Memorial in New Delhi to observe Police Commemoration Day. This day honors the sacrifice of ten brave policemen who lost their lives on October 21, 1959, in an ambush by Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh. Since then, October 21 has been observed annually to commemorate the courage and dedication of India’s police forces in safeguarding the nation.

Ceremony Highlights

The event will feature a disciplined joint parade by the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Delhi Police, showcasing their unity and commitment. Distinguished guests, including the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Members of Parliament with police backgrounds, heads of CAPFs and Central Police Organizations (CPOs), retired Directors General, police officers, and other dignitaries, will join Shri Rajnath Singh in paying tributes. The Raksha Mantri will address the gathering, reflecting on the invaluable contributions and sacrifices of police personnel.

In 2018, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi dedicated the National Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, to the nation, recognizing the critical role of police personnel in protecting national security and integrity. The memorial stands as a powerful tribute to their bravery, unity, and shared history, inspiring police forces to continue their selfless service.

Key Features of the Memorial

  • Central Monolith: A 30-foot-high granite cenotaph symbolizing the strength, resilience, and dedication of police personnel.
  • Wall of Valour: An engraved tribute honoring police martyrs who have sacrificed their lives since India’s Independence.
  • Museum: An interactive exhibition showcasing the history and contributions of Indian policing, open to the public daily except Mondays.

Weekly Ceremonies

Every Saturday and Sunday evening, one hour before sunset, the CAPFs host band displays, parades, and retreat ceremonies at the National Police Memorial. These events highlight the discipline and pride of India’s police forces, offering a glimpse into their dedication.

Nationwide Commemorative Events

From October 22 to 30, CAPFs and CPOs will organize various activities at the National Police Memorial and across India to honor police martyrs. These include:

  • Visits by families of martyred police personnel to pay respects.
  • Police band performances and motorcycle rallies showcasing unity.
  • Runs for martyrs and blood donation camps to engage communities.
  • Essay and painting competitions for children to foster awareness.
  • Video screenings highlighting the sacrifice, valor, and service of police personnel.

Similar programs will be conducted by police forces nationwide, fostering a shared sense of remembrance and unity.
