Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Space, Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, Dr. Jitendra Singh, visited the India Meteorological Department (IMD) headquarters at Mausam Bhavan, New Delhi, to review its cutting-edge, in-house developed Web-GIS based Multi-Hazard Early Warning Decision Support System (DSS).
Advancing Disaster Preparedness with Indigenous Technology
Dr. Jitendra Singh praised IMD’s strides in developing self-reliant, technology-driven, and citizen-centric weather forecasting systems that bolster disaster preparedness and enhance public safety nationwide. The Multi-Hazard Early Warning DSS has saved an estimated ₹250 crore by eliminating reliance on foreign vendors and avoiding ₹5.5 crore in annual maintenance costs, aligning with the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative for self-reliance.
Mausamgram: Hyperlocal Weather at Your Fingertips
The Minister also reviewed “Mausamgram” (Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam), a unique platform delivering hyperlocal, village-level weather forecasts. This system provides hourly updates for the next 36 hours, three-hourly forecasts for five days, and six-hourly forecasts for up to ten days. Accessible via PIN code, location name, or by selecting state, district, block, and gram panchayat, Mausamgram is available in all official Indian languages, ensuring timely and accurate weather updates for every citizen.
Revolutionizing Forecasting with AI and Real-Time Alerts
IMD has transformed its forecasting and warning processes, enabling real-time alerts with a 7-day lead period (up from 5 days), reducing preparation time by approximately 3 hours, and improving accuracy by 15–20%. Dr. Jitendra Singh encouraged the integration of AI-driven mechanisms into Mausamgram to enhance user-friendliness and accessibility. He also emphasized further developing the Multi-Hazard Early Warning System to deliver clear, actionable alerts for disaster prevention and preparedness.
National Recognition and Swachhata Achievements
IMD’s efforts were recognized with the National Award for e-Governance 2025 at the 28th National Conference on e-Governance in Visakhapatnam for its exemplary use of digital technology in public service delivery through the DSS. The Minister also commended IMD’s Special Swachhata Program 5.0, which generated ₹30 lakh in revenue through the disposal of old files and e-waste, freeing up 600 square meters of office space.
Swachhata Program and Environmental Initiatives
During the visit, Dr. Jitendra Singh participated in the Special Swachhata Program 5.0 at Mausam Bhavan, planting a sapling as part of the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative and honoring 50 “Safai Mitras” for their dedication to cleanliness and maintenance.
Mission Mausam: A Vision for 2030
The ongoing Mission Mausam aims to enhance IMD’s forecasting capabilities by 2030 through advanced meteorological instruments. This initiative will enable severe weather forecasting at a 5×5 km scale, dynamic impact-based forecasting, and risk-based early warnings, ensuring last-mile connectivity to deliver early warnings to every household, fulfilling the vision of “Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam.”
