Commemorating the Sacrifice of Police Martyrs
On October 21, 2025, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh will lead the nation in paying homage to police martyrs at the National Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, on Police Commemoration Day. This solemn occasion honors the bravery and supreme sacrifice of police personnel who have laid down their lives in the line of duty.
Historical Significance of October 21
The significance of Police Commemoration Day traces back to October 21, 1959, when ten courageous policemen were ambushed and killed by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh. Since then, this day has been observed annually to honor these martyrs and all other police personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation’s security and integrity.
Dedication of the National Police Memorial
In recognition of the invaluable contributions of police personnel, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi dedicated the National Police Memorial to the nation on Police Commemoration Day in 2018. The memorial serves as a symbol of national pride, unity, and the shared commitment of police forces to protect the country, even at the cost of their lives.
